    FTP Question

I just downloaded SmartFTP v4.0.1 for the first time. Since this is my first time using the product, I thought I would transfer a file or two from my webserver to my local machine to help familiarize myself with it. The file I transferred was config.php. I transferred the file in "auto" mode. However, when I opened the file in Note Pad, the contents of the file was not properly formatted. I transfer the same file in ASCII mode and formatting is not an issue.

I want to use SmartFTP for future upgrades, etc. Is there something I'm missing or should I just refrain from using the automatic option?

Automatic is typically fine, you usually have three transfer type options in a FTP client for uploading:

    ASCII
    BINARY
    AUTO

Now I've heard of SmartFTP but between me and you, I've used FileZilla for years without any issues. You'll want to re-upload the config.php in the correct mode otherwise as you noticed the formatting can be off and whitespace in some files is not advised.

The reason I downloaded SmartFTP was because vBulletin recommended it in their online manual. I believe it was the "How To Backup Your Data" document?

Anyway, I will give Filezilla a try.

    Thank you!
